Competition

What is Competition?

For students wishing to pursue dance at a more intensive level we offer a competition program that combines exciting performance opportunities with intensive dance training. Our competitive teams compete in various dance disciplines and range in age from 9 to 18yrs. Aspiring competitive dancers must have previous dance experience and pass an audition before being accepted on to the team. This audition takes place at the end of the season and students submit a request from with what they would like to do in competition pieces for the following year (solos, duets, trios, what type of dance, how many groups they’d like to participate in etc.)

Our teams compete at 2 – 4 competitions/festivals each year and perform at local events such as Canada Day & Salmon Arm Fall Fair. Our goal is to create a positive, fun environment for students to experience stage & dance in a professional atmosphere. Choreography and rehearsal of competitive routines is done mostly outside of class time on Saturdays and some week day evenings. The weekly choreography schedule is posted on the website regularly.

All competitive group students will be expected to perform in the Christmas, year-end and Gala shows. Being a part of any competitive team means a commitment and dedication from both parent and student beyond that of the recreational level. It is understood that students will make competitive dance at Shuswap Dance Center a priority. General expectations of the programs as well as estimations of costs and commitments are posted on the website at the beginning of each season.

Students eligible for competition need to be attending 2 ballet classes per week Grade 2 and up, contemporary and stretch and technique.
